Fine Art Photography- An Abstract Art

Light is considered to be one important element in photography that helps in giving different effects on photos. Photos taken in natural light or in warm glow of incandescent light, the camera captures the effect of light on the objects and subjects. Though light is an integral part of every type of photography, in fine art photography it plays an important role in setting the mood and giving the texture to its subjects and props. Professional photographer understands how the lens and eye perceive the light color spectrum and therefore make complete use of light in photography. Natural light due to its inconsistent lighting projects different shades of the color spectrum. At midday, the blue portion of the color spectrum produces the clearest, sharpest pictures in bright light. Where as, at sunrise and sunset the red portion of the spectrum produces warmer pictures with a softer contrast. The direction of lighting in photography helps in creating different effects on the pictures. The different angles of light create different shadows and helps in changing the appearance of the subject. Different types of artificial lights like bulbs, tube lights, florescent lights and LED lights on panorama fixtures create different types of lighting environments and produces different effects.

Since fine art photography is related to art and is dedicated in producing pictures for aesthetic purposes, light is the core of this type of photography. Capturing the exquisite and beautiful pictures in different forms of light for exploring the meaning of any expression or emotion is one of the most difficult tasks and fine art photography is all about this. Fine art pictures taken by talented photographers are housed in museums and art galleries for their display. Framing is done to keep these exclusive photographs safe and secure. It also protects these masterpieces from any kind of damage or wear and tear. In Australia, national art gallery showcases some of the most exquisite and exclusive pictures and artworks of exceptionally talented photographers and painters. One can see different moods of Sydney city through Sydney photos depicting cityscapes, seascapes and other types of pictures.

Many famous photography companies like Photography Australia offers a number of Australian stock photography pictures on their websites for public use. Graphic designers, publishers, filmmakers and even individuals can buy these stock photos and use them as per their requirement. The stock pictures include wildlife, nature, underwater, advertising and other types of photography genres pictures. Catalogs of stock pictures can be downloaded from the internet and can be used in many forms and campaigns.

Companies like Photography Melbourne and Photography Sydney offer professional fine art photography services and has years of experience in the respected field. Fine art pictures are produced in limited prints and can be used in advertisements and magazines. Many colleges and universities offer graduate and undergraduate courses in fine art photography. But, this type of photography requires more than learning and use of camera equipment. The skill of the photographer matters a lot in presenting objects and subjects in beautiful ways to convey intensity and emotion.

Abstract Photography Tips

A rather ambiguous terminology some would say. Abstract photography is a genre of photography that lends itself to the exploration of various means of communication. When shooting abstract, it is important to have a good visual awareness about your subject, as abstract photography relies on shapes, forms and texture that is representative to its true to form.

Abstract whether in art or photography form, can be very personal. We are all familiar with Pollock, Kandinsky and Picasso, great 20th century artists that painted based on their environment and live experiences. Like them or not, they were great painters that had portrayed great visual content in abstract form.

Choosing a subject of abstract form can be very challenging. However, abstract photography can be very fulfilling, in that, it opens the mind to a brand new visual experience, one that stimulates the imagination beyond the normality of perspective.

Abstract photography is not just about shooting the image in its entirety. The perception of abstract photography has intrinsic values. The photographer not only concentrates on lines, forms and textures, but the compatibility of colours along with composition to achieve a great image. Abstract photography is the abstraction of part of an image that makes up the whole image. You remove all aspects of the image to reveal its artistic value.

It is amazing what you can find to photograph in an abstract way. Look around your home, your food cupboard, your fruit bowl and jewellery, all these make an ideal subject and will challenge your creativeness. Most abstract photography requires close focus to do it any justice. For example; you can use a 110mm macro lens that allows you to be 2cm away from your subject or, any short lens that allows you to focus in closely.

To make your subject even more interesting, try spraying water on it or vary your lighting with various filters. This will not just enhance the image, but will transform it into something captivating and intriguing to the viewer. When editing your image in Photoshop, de-saturating the image to black and white and then adding little colour brings out key aspects of the image.

In essence, abstract photography is not a true reflection of the natural world. This is the beauty of it. It concentrates on a certain characteristic of the subject in an aesthetic way, and so the abstraction of a particular image becomes art. It draws you in and challenges you, it can move you, and it compels you to ask questions. It can be minimal, busy, colourful, dark and mysterious. You do not have to be a professional photographer to produce good abstract photography, nevertheless having some knowledge of the equipment and a good visual awareness will make this a fun thing to do whether for a hobby or professional pursuits.

Photography Ideas For Artistic Photography Projects — Negative Space

Are you searching for some photography ideas for a photography project? Selecting a photography project that not only creates some great shots but also helps you build your photography skills would be a good idea. There are various skills that one can pick for a project. This article presents one skill, negative space, which you can use for a photography project that can help to develop your skills.

Negative space is essentially a compositional method. When applied correctly, its use can produce beautiful images.

Making Use of Negative Space

There are three main compositional components to a photography image.

Frame: The border that identifies the edges of the image.

Positive Space: The positive space is composed of the objects that the photo is all about. Put simply, it is the main subject of the photograph.

Negative Space: The space between the positive space and the frame.

Any photograph is formed, in various proportions, of the frame, positive space, and negative space. In order to create impressive photos, it is necessary to manage these components.

When composing photographs, some people tend to think mostly in terms of the positive space. Very little consideration is put into the negative space. It is treated almost as an unimportant part of the image. This is not the best way to compose an image! When handled well, the negative space can carry out two important functions. Thus, the negative space can significantly enhance an image:

First: The negative space can serve to define the positive space.

Second: The negative space can encircle the positive space in a way that can make it much more conspicuous.

The negative space can serve to help define the positive space by furnishing detail about the positive space. As one example, a photo may show part of a bridge. Nevertheless, there may be few details that give any suggestions of where the bridge is based. Is the subject that forms the positive space in a crowded, urban park or in a natural environment? We can not tell from the close-up. More information is necessary to better define the positive space. If the photographer were to show some of the landscape around the positive space, this would produce some negative space that would help to better define the positive space.

However, when making use of the negative space in this manner, it is essential that the negative space not overpower the positive space. For this example, the photographer could render the negative space a bit out of focus so that it becomes subservient to the positive space.

The essential point here is that the negative space has to support, not compete with, the positive space. Otherwise, the negative space will not likely enhance the image.

The negative space can also help make the positive space stand out. This is achieved because the negative space helps to manage the attention of a viewer. It does this by helping to direct the viewer’s attention to the positive space. To make the negative space more effective at focusing the attention, all distracting detail must be eliminated from the negative space.

So the moral of the story is that each of these two spaces needs to be very carefully evaluated when an image is composed.

Photography Project

Now, it’s time for your photography project. Why not create a portfolio of images with negative spaces that function to enhance the images?

In Conclusion

This article covered one skill you can use to begin a photography project. However, much more can be learned.

Paul Blanca And His Shocking Art Photography

Paul Blanca (1954/58), official name Paul Vlaswinkel, is a Dutch artist (art photographer) who had a breakthrough in the early 80s of the last century with his confrontational violent self-portraits influenced by the American photographers Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) and Andres Serrano (1950). The self-taught Blanca came into touch with the artscene when he met Eva Veldhoen, the daughter of the well-known Dutch painter Aat Veldhoen (1934). The acquaintance with this artistic environment was a real eye-opener for Blanca and shortly after he started photographing, first in color with a small screen camera but very soon after shooting in B&W using a Hasselblad camera (6 X 6 cm).

In 1980 he was introduced to the world-famous choreographer Hans van Manen (1932), who is a meritorious photographer himself and had a photo studio. Besides their mutual interest in photography, Van Manen also used Blanca in one of his dance choreographies called Pose in which Blanca performed as a kick-boxer, he was a practitioner of this full-contact sport from the age of 16, surrounded by ballerina’s.

Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) who was a close friend of Van Manen was very impressed by Blanca’s self-portraits and later introduced him to New York’s high society (like Keith Haring, Willem de Kooning, Japser Johns, Grace Jones…etc.) stating ‘Paul Blanca is my only competitor’. The art collector Bill Katz says in Anthony Haden Guest’s True Colors – The Real Life of the Art World on Blanca: “…he reaches a kind of poetry few artists have”.

Most of Blanca’s self-portraits deal with strong emotions and violent themes like fear, sadness, pain, agression and sexuality exploring his inner demons. Diametrically against this harsh work, there are the sensitive and gentle pictures like the one called Mother and Son (Mapplethorpe’s favourite) depicting himself in a tender embrace with his mother, both fully naked, or the portrait holding his newborn son in the air called Father and Son.

In 1986 Blanca worked on a book called Timing (edition of 1000) which featured the upcoming Dutch artists of the eighties and his photographs were accompanied by poems of Koos Dalstra (1950). For his touching series Par la Pluie des Femmes (1989) he asked his female models to think of their most traumatic experiences. Together with Hans Gieles and Francis Boeske of the gallery Vous Etes Ici he produced the magnificent Sangre de Toro series in 1991 (see ‘Blood of the Bull’ below).

During this time Blanca also started as a research-journalist for the Amsterdam weekly, Nieuwe Revu and the newspaper Het Parool. He wrote about crack and again exploring his own boundaries he started to use it himself, resulting in an addiction. His article for Nieuwe Revu on weapons was the starting point of a downward spiral with him being a suspect in the assault on Rob Scholte in 1995 because of his “knowledge” of grenades. There was a long silence but in 2008 Blanca returned with a project called Mi Mattes in which he photographed gangmembers hanging around his studio.

Self-portraits

Over the years there seems to be an increasing will-power in Blanca’s self-portraits. In 1982 he photographed himself With Eelsholding six living eels in his mouth (in his perception a disgusting animal), he looks into the world (at the viewer) with a resigned facial expression like he’s thinking “that’s how it really goes” with the scavengers fulfilling his wish to immortalization. In Blanca’s Selfportrait, Back with Mickey Mouse, the large depiction on his back inflicted with a sharp knife (razor blade) by a befriended tattoo-artist, of Mickey Mouse with his thumbs up and a big smile, like he’s saying: “Keep up the good work”, is a sceptical statement because the mouse is crying. In his Selfportrait Bull (1982) Blanca becomes, with his painted body disguished as a bull and his agressive facial expression, a disturbed figure. With his erected penis in his left hand and his right hand in a clenched grip, he’s looking for an exertion disarming the poetic image. The excessive nature of Blanca’s self-portraits serve as a purification and therefore he has to subvert all boundaries and norms.

Blood of the Bull

Blanca who had lived and worked in Spain for two years (in the early 90s), had, while there, become obsessed by bullfighting and kept up with all the ferias (local seasonal festivities) to take photographs. To challenge himself emotionally Blanca also participated in a bullfight, not with real bulls but with dangerous vacas(cows) of 850 pounds. It intrigued him that when the corrida (bullfight) was at an end, the bull’s meat was served in restaurants but nothing was done with the blood- it is the fluid of life, after all. Blanca investigated whether blood could be used as silk-screen printing-ink. The treated blood was used for the Sangre de Toro port-folio, based on Blanca’s photos. Pressing the ink through the screen only once produced no more than a light pink colour, and in the end 35 ‘pulls’ were needed to achieve the darkest tone in the pictures, creating a visible relief. The series forms a high point on the periphery of Blanca’s photographic work. For the affecionades(devotees) it is a must, for opponents of bullfighting it is also a monument of beauty.

Bird Photography Tips

A few people have emailed me asking for some bird photography tips and tricks of the trade. After some thought on the subject, I have come up with the following 10 tips for photographing birds.

Practice with the Locals. The best way to become familiar with photographing birds in your own backyard. What birds can you photograph at home? Do you have a birdfeeder or birdbath set up in your yard to draw birds in? Use these local birds to see behaviors such as how close you can get before they spook, and whether they eat at the feeder or take the food to somewhere nearby to enjoy it. Start by photographing birds in your yard to get used to their movements and feeding habits.

Timing is everything. Most species of birds eat in the morning or late afternoon. Get to know the habits of the bird that you are photographing and where it returns every day to feed.

Walk softly. Learn how to approach birds quietly and with very little movement. This goes for all wildlife photography.

Be respectful of nature. When photographing a bird, or photographing any wildlife, never corner the animal. Be mindful that the bird has a way of escape if it gets scared. This helps to ensure that the bird does not begin to fear all humans because of one disrespectful one.

Be wary of the weather. If the weather is threatening, the birds will tuck themselves where they will be safe from the weather. It may be best to just try another day.

Know what you want. Study bird photographs. Most bird photographs were the result of countless hours of waiting, and perhaps returning for several days to the same location that the bird frequents. If the image that you seek is of an Osprey catching a fish, the odds are very small that you will just happen upon that opportunity and get it, especially with the perfect light and background.

Do not chase. It sometimes is hard to finally see the bird that you want to photograph and not chase it around wildly. Be conscious of your movements and the signals that you giving to the animal. If you act frantic, don’t you think that the bird will too?

Behaviors make the best bird photographs. Photograph birds doing natural movements such as pruning, bathing, or feeding make for much more interesting photographs than a bird sitting on a wall.

Prepare in advance. When you know where you are going, and when the bird will be there, it is easy to get a chair and tripod set up so that you are ready to photograph the bird when it arrives. Do your homework.

Be patient! I always have to reiterate this with new wildlife photographers. The bird is not going to arrive and ask for its photo to be taken! It is a blessing when the opportunity for a great photograph happens. Appreciate it!
